What is this site about?
Welcome to my online home--mi casa is your casa.
This is my online portfolio of thought and work as I navigate through the self-created identity of a "Green Chicano" in a professional sense. In particular as I weave through the roles of Conservationist/Environmentalist, Chicano, and Educator. Throw into the mix a bit about other things as Latino nerd, illustrator, and the like.
You may read more writings on the Green Chicano Blog, peruse arte for sale on the Etsy shop, and follow on Twitter @Green_Chicano and @JoseBilingue.
"Green Chicano" came about thinking how one can be environmentally conscious while embodying principles of Chicanismo. Both aspects are of course not mutually exclusive, but I think the opportunity exists to make linkages more explicitly.

Environment & ConservationThis site is meant as repository and work in progress of my thoughts and work regarding environmental issues and the Chicano/Latino community. Essentially, it is where I will share with you, the reader, and hope you share back. The work will come from my personal experiences and reflections as well as current work I am undertaking on various issues and matters.
I also wish for this site to serve as portal to the people I follow and admire, resources I use and organizations I follow up on. |
Educator & IllustratorI am also a teacher by training...
I have had the joy and opportunity to work with students of all ages and spirits. I've taught and learned from elementary students, middle school students, high school students, at-risk youth, college students and a host of others. I love to be in a learning environment. I currently hold a California Social Studies Single Subject Credential and will have an Administrative Services Credential. I hold a B.A in History and a M.S in Natural Resources & Environment. I've taught science education, primary language development, culture, history, and Spanish. Keep on learning! |
Chicano & LatinoHow am I a Chicano? What is a Chicano? How much of a Chicano am I? As one elder put it once "Xicanos are descendants of guards in Tenochtitlan, they were guards of traditions and practices and thus to be a Xicano is to be a defender of the culture". To this day I think it's one of the best definitions I've heard. I will not give you a "definition" since that can be debated until the quarks come home. Does it mean Mexican-American? Is it a political identity? Suffice it to say, and understanding that for some it's fighting words, for now I choose to identify as a Chicano with the safeguarding of culture in mind.
